Futureboogie: Todd Terje at Dojo, Bristol
OK, so basically we heart Todd Terje. As far as we’re concerned pretty much everything he touches turns to discoid gold dust. Ever since we first heard the (still) stupendously good ‘Eurodans’ in 2005, we’ve been noting this guys motive.
At the forefront of what you might wish to call new disco, he has definitely been one of the front runners in the emergence of a whole new wave of Scandinavian producers, who sometimes seem to make their music in a weird bubble where the rest of the world doesn’t exist, one that that encompasses strange noises, a hint of folk music, a drop of acid, a whole host of left turns, and a dry but cheeky sense of humour.
And despite Terje’s encyclopedic knowledge of all things disco, he discjogs his way through through house, techno, Balearic, soundtracks and anything else he cares to throw in there – the kind of DJ who always provides a WTF moment on the dancefloor, and those are always priceless.
A remixer of high repute, last year saw him delivering the definitive remix of Shit Robot’s ‘Simple Things’ on DFA, and a ridiculously good rework of M’s 80’s wonky pop smash ‘Pop Muzik’, and the next couple of months will bring an already much hyped mix of Mungolian Jetset’s ‘Moon Jock’s and Prog Rocks’, and a collection of his remix and production work for hype German label Permanent Vacation.
4 Other Reasons to heart Todd Terje
1/ We took him record shopping once. He bought a trumpet and a flute.
2/ He DJed at Mulletover’s warehouse party in his socks. And playing cowbell.
3/ He has just ‘allegedly’ joined a choir.
4/ The B side of his first single was called ‘Booze Finger’.
