2 BANKS OF 4

MAD AS PISS

the man. the myth. the legend. rob gallagher is many things to many people, and probably several things to nobody at all. let's face it you gotta admire the way he run tings. he's one half of 2 banks of 4 dontcha know - the other half being demus - and they are about to release the rather beautiful second 2 banks of 4 album 'three street world's' on october 13, on rob's own red egyptian jazz records. you should get into it, it's proper.....

1. i did a little internet search on 'earl zinger', and if i read the phrase 'earl zinger is actually former galliano frontman rob gallagher' one more time i'm gonna scream. now that the light is well and truly out from under the bushel is time to kill off zinger? or perhaps we'll find rob gallagher in the shower and realise it was all a dream?

my shower is broke and needs real careful negotiation to get the temp non life threatening.however i must admit this outing of me as earl zinger has taken me a little by surprise. of course i've heard of zinger in darkened corridors of studios and clubs, a legend, a man that had his hand in everything but nobody even knew what he looked like - so there shall be no killing off of the zinger - in fact as i understand it zinger rides again soon in an lp called attack of the djs due for feb release on K7 - so i've heard .....

2. three street worlds is coming out on your own label, which is both admirable and unusual. surely there were some major label dudes with bags of filthy lucre that could get it to a wider audience that is deserves?

if the record sells and we can get it out to where it needs to go then we made the right move if not then we didn't necessarily make the wrong move coz the way the bizness is at the moment it makes sense to keep control of your own shit and try and make it work for you. we licensed it in japan to p vine records who are wicked and now looking for a deal in america. its pure do a remix and pay for records to be made - brave and stupid but it seemed to be the move - but if you know of someone with A LOT of dirty luca then maybe lets find out exactly how much !!

3. what have demus and yourself tried to do with this new record?

we made an album that is kinda classic in nature as in its got the arrangements and songs but also totally studio tech based but not putting a load of filters on something to make it contemporary - that's possibly the most incoherant answer ever thank god demus not about - re write it yourselves make me sound good - respek

4. what/who has inspired, influenced, and informed this record?

inspiration is a weird one. i don't know about demus but i get inspired by everything all over the place ....of course music and lyrics that directly impact on your own shit but also mad little bits like the way some kids riding their bike or wearing jeans or hat a bit weird. it's an energy that feeds into that creative thing i think i don't really get it. if i did i'd eat a load of it and never get those dead days - but they inspire in their own way as well

5. explain your apparent fascination with cities and urban living?

phsykick geography mixed with making sense of where you come from and did you know we mixed the album out in suffolk drinking tea and listening to radio 4 - anti urban ya git mi ...

6. tell us about the red egyptians.

singles from earl zinger - blues and the new worm ep by aquinas tunebelly - the secret waltz band lp - the red egyptians album compilation of all the acts on the label including lenny costanza's original 1956 demo version of can't get you outa my head with ryichi iyota, jean carramouch, dj hectik, red egyptians zinger and the rest - modern day classic. more coming soon - jean carramouch album, valerie etienne album and the benstead joint coz that shit is banging off the hook - return of red egyptians also coming

7. a rubbish phrase i know but i reckon that 'city watching' was quite 'ahead of it's time' really. would you agree, and do you think that three street worlds will be born unto a world that is more ready for it?

there maybe wasn't as many albums around than that could be its contemporaries and that ain't a good thing ...hopefully people will like it and hear it so we can sell sell some friggin copies .....i'm definitly very proud of both albums but 3 street worlds is maybe the most complete album i've been involved with

8. you are obviously a man fond of observing. as rainer truby put it 'we've survived acid jazz and we'll survive new jazz', which is a statement that could well apply to yourself. could you give your views on the current state of musical play with regards to the 'jazz'?

i'm looking for the acid jazz revival - i seen two t shirts in tokyo and one in london although that was probably ironic - so lets live thru that as well - understand that U.K. straight to ya neck - heard a wicked sleep walker track in osaka with pharoah saunders we gonna put some vocals on it. i'm a bit out of the loop on the nu jazz flex - not exactly sure what it is - did zinger invent it - but lets live thru that shit aswell ....

9. what other pies does rob gallagher have his fingers in?

not so many pies as nappies ....i've had to give up my hopes of running naked across the kalihari for a while as val goes off to earn some money coz i spent all mine on printing up 2bo4 cds . so i'm staying indoors looking after jared sirus levi gallagher who will soon take his first solids - respek that i did have a finger in the lenny constanza - can't get you outa my head. lucky kylie liked it as the job val just got is doing backing vocals with her - that's karma baby - i must be a nice guy

10. the future's bright, the future's....?

sun screen - actually its not now, gotta keep out , a good hat the futures a good hat always has been thanks for the support glad you like the album - big up joe 90 especially the speks kinda early cazal type shit - was he there with kool herc in the early days in the bronx? joe 90 a beats pioneer. i better stop now.
