1. why you called raw deal then?
When I were a young lad an' all inta 'ip 'op i were in a group as DJ,
cuttin' n scratchin' an' all that, but I needed a 'ip 'op sounding name
so i chose Raw Deal, thinking hhhmmm that sounds well 'ip 'op an' right
street like, proper bo selecter! Now i'm just stuck with it, well for time
being anyway.
2. apart from being raw deal
what other stuff have you done musically?
I've always been a bit of a wizard on the spoons, and make regular
live apperances at my local, The Head & Bucket.
3. what happened with talkin
loud?
That's a question for Gilles Peterson & Paul Martin, I was
just a pawn, or maybe a prawn in the big salad that was Talkin Loud!
4. how d'you end up hookin up
with straight ahead?
I met Alex Dallas (A&R man,and label owner) six years ago
when he asked me to DJ at his club in Zurich, Switzerland. Over that time
we built up a friendship, and a shared passion................................for
music. He started up a label, and had asked me to do some remixes for it,
I really liked the vibe of the label, and the other artists, so when everything
at Talkin Loud started to go pear shaped I was telling Alex, and he suggested
if I would like to put out an album for him. So after tempting me with
boxes and boxes of the finest Swiss chocolate and several gold watches
I thought yeah why not.
6. eye fly, which is, frankly,
fuckin ace, is just out, what's next?
Now there's a song title 'Frankly,,,Fuckin Ace' HHHMM? My next
release on Straight Ahead will be a cover version of Archie Shep's 'Blues
For Brother George Jackson', with an Earthbound remix on the B-side. I
recently done a track for a album called 'Trip Do West' on a French label
called Rythmix,a remix for a Compost records project 'Ennio Morricone
Remixed',and a remix for a Canadian label run by John Kong from Movement
in Toronto. AND, an album of classic pop songs played on the spoons with
banjo accompaniment by my drinking partner Patrcik O'Conner, recorded
live at The Head & Bucket.
7. describe your music/DJ styles
in a few words please.
Oh mate, I get confused just trying make music let alone describe
it, i'll leave that to those who wish to listen. But I can say this about
my DJing,I like it up beat and lively, always soulful with lots of Jazzy
flavourings.
8. is there anything the good
people of bristol should know about you prior to your arrival?
The least they know about me the better, I don't want to scare
anyone.
9. the future's bright, the future's.
. . ?
TOMORROW!
