Goddamn we love this man. His first EP 'Spelunking' was a work of genius. The first single 'Ain't Changin', from his last album 'Cardiology' was a work of genius. Now for god's sake, the first single 'Dust' from his new album 'Hiatus on the Horizon', which is out next week on Peacefrog, is a work of genius. Jeez, can this man do no wrong? Is he like a detroit tech funk soul robot from the future or something? Lets find out....

1. Hi Matt - please introduce yoself for the uninitiated.

Hello, I'm Matthew Chicoine aka Recloose. I'm a libra. I'm originally from Detroit but have been living in New Zealand for 3 and a half years now.

2. 'Dust' is frankly a fuckin legend of a track - were you surprised at just how excited people are about that record?

Yes a bit. I knew it was nice but wasn't really expecting the hoopla that its been getting. Its a kick in the ass to get back to work and make some mo!

3. Tell us about 'Hiatus on the Horizon' then?

It was all concieved, recorded, produced, and mixed here in Wellington, New Zealand. The only non-Kiwis on it are me, Justin Chapman, and Genevieve Marentette (both on Landed). The name is a nod to the fact I've been laying low for a minute and moved to some place that few of my friends back home know anything about. I come home and they start doing jacked up Australian accents, how's that for the love?

4. When we spoke for a previous interview, you mentioned wanting to produce "less with my brain and more with innards" - hows that idea been goin?

This one was about producing more with my butt.

5. Cardiology was a crazy record - this album has the same variety of beats, but seems more 'streamlined' if you know what i mean?

Yes, streamlined maybe because I spent too long on it, but I'm still pretty happy with the end result. Remains to be seen though if this album is a tangent or a direction... think the former.

6. How's NZ life treating you?

Its okay, but its cold as hell at the moment. Its scenic, but that means you gotta leave the house to enjoy it. If you stay in all the time its just like Detroit. Except we get Coronation Street here.

7. Any plans for visits here - live show?

Yes, in the pipes. Will start rehearsing my group in a few weeks, all Kiwi line-up (save me and the singer, Deva Mahal, daughter of Taj and a fellow expat). Should be seeing you in late autumn.

8. What else you got going on currently?

A few remixes (Bakura aka Domu, Mark De Clive-Lowe, some stuff for Sound Signature), the live group, and getting cracking on the next album.

9. The future's bright, the future's....?

I wish I knew man. If I had an idea I'd let you in, alas...
