1. for the record list your
various recording names?
Opaque, Oreja, Homecookin', Disorient (Back in '95 before the
name was appropriated)
2. how do these different names
work when you're writing music - do you just make it then decide which
name to release it under, or do you have to put your different 'heads'
on?
To be honest, I'm trying to get away from the whole multiple
names thing, now I really only record as Seiji, and if it has an obviously
latin/house feel then as Oreja.
3. what are you working on
at the moment?
A remix of Nitin Sawhney...
4. you've been with the bugz
from the start - was there ever a game plan for the collective?
Orin Afronaught Walters is the daddy of Bugz, and he definitely
had a vision when started pulling us all together....I think it was
just an awareness that a whole can be greater than the sum of its parts...
5. tricky question - but how
did the whole 'broken beat' thing come about?
Organically, like all the best music...as far as the scene goes
Co-op was the catalyst.
6. where do you see it going
/ developing?
It's started to reach a wider audience, and I think it's already
influencing the mainstream.....the more sophisticated tracks will still
appeal mainly to the (camouflage) anoraks but I'm hoping that the spirit
of the whole thing will give a kick up the arse to stale music genres.
7. you're a bit of a remix
master (!) - do you have a favourite?
Thanks mate. 'Move on up' has a special place in my heart.....
8. do you have to like the
track you're remixing, or is it better not to?
It helps if the original isn't so perfect that you don't want
to touch it!
9. what have you got coming
up over the next few months?
Lots of gigs over the summer, a few remixes, but I'm really
focusing now on starting work on an LP.
10. the future's bright, the
future's...?
The future's bruk, the future's Orin's....
