TM JUKE
HATSTAND

the artist formally known as al stylus has, in the best traditions, reinvented himself as tm juke. when he's not listening we like to call him the ginger prince. one, because he's a genuine prince among men. two, because he's ginger. he also allegedly does the accounts for our brighton comrades tru thoughts records, which may explain how they managed to afford such a plush sleeve for his debut album 'maps from the wilderness'. the fact that he spends all day doing the books may also explain why he felt the need to go make such a beautiful record, steeped in old soul and funk, and with a smattering of sweet vocals, jazz and hip hop. apparently gilles peterson got so excited when he played 'knee deep', the first single from the album, on his show, he nearly had a little wee.

you know how much 'downtempo' rubbish gets released? well tm juke reclaims the phrase from the legions of rinsed out ministry of sound compilations, and restores some of it's original meaning.
chap.

1. please introduce yourself
Hi there..... yeah my name is TM Juke?

2. tell us why we are asking you these questions
Because I've just released my debut album on Tru Thoughts Records 'Maps From The Wilderness'

3. you used to be called 'al stylus' which i thought was a great name - is al tylus dead now?
...he was a loser

4. nice album sleeve, although someone remarked that it reminds them of a crime scene?
A few people have said it looks like a 'Charmin' advert? All the design was put together by my good friend Adam Farley, who incidentally is the twin brother of Joe 90....he's a very talented guy....he's also just finished a promo for the first track on the LP 'Knee Deep' which is looking pretty ace....It features cameos from none other than your man: Bonobo, Quantic, Russ (The Limp Twins) Sri (Tru Thoughts fortified press officer) Alice Russell, Jim Oxborough...and loads more good guys n girls! So look out for that.

5. and what's with the 'funny little man and arm' scenario?
Well Ad Farley found the little guy...We felt a bit sorry for him....(the whole arm thing) so we thought we would try and make him slightly famous. It also gives me the option to start a splinter group 'The Arm Of TM Juke' which will mainly be based around covers of Guns N' Roses

6. you got your own coat of arms - freesshh - do you have delusions of
grandeur or are you genuinely like, aristocracy or something? ...er delusions of grandeur

7. s'pose we should talk about the LP right? it's your debut and it's damn
good. what are you saying about it?
I'm pretty please with it now....there was a period of big depression when i was finishing it up 'I hate it, I hate it!!!!' but i'm over that now. It feels good to have it finished up, i kinda hope people either love it or hate. I'm looking forward to now getting on with some new stuff, the best thing its given me is confidence to continue making music.

8. 'classically trained guitarist since the age of 7'. you kept that a bit quiet didn't you? so are you some kind of charlotte church of the downtempo world then?
Yeah it's not a lie....I used to play in guitar ensembles as well! But i enjoyed all of that. It was all because my dad wanted me to be the next segovia i think? He force taught me until i cried....but i thank him now.

9. what would you like people to be saying about your lp?
'I Listened to that TM Juke album the other day I think its fresh'

10. what would you like them not to be sayin?
'I'd rather eat my own hat than listen to that Sh*t'

11. what else goes on in tm juke world - i heard you were starting some kindof supergroup with bonobo?
Well myself, Evil Sun (who is an amazing producer, watch out for him in the future!) and Bonobo are trying to get together to work on a completely live studio project...Mainly funk / soul / folk influenced...we have started writing it...but its going to be hard work to record as some of the instrumentation is quite ambitious but hey that will be the fun stuff!

12. the future's bright, the future's ....?
er...........A Futuristic wilderness?
